How to Make Tortillas: A Tutorial in Pictures

We love tortillas around here.  We use them for fajitas, sweet potato bean burritos, hummus wraps, enchiladas…  Today I was making homemade tortillas in bulk in order to freeze several.   I was also making sweet potato bean burritos to both freeze and have for lunch.  Yum!

Did you know that it is easy to learn how to make tortillas at home?  Today, I want to show you in pictures, how to do it.  This is a simple recipe for homemade flour tortillas that you and your family will love.

Lets get started:

flour for tortillasYou’ll need two cups of flour from hard white wheat.

salt1/2 tsp of salt

butter

1 tablespoon of butter

water and butterand enough water over the melted butter to make 3/4c (I tripled the recipe here!).

adding water and butter to flourNow, add your water and butter mixture to the flour.  Stir well.

kneading tortilla doughAfter you have stirred to mix the dough, knead it for two minutes.

dough ballYour dough should be in a nice round ball once you’re done kneading!

covered doughCover the dough with a damp cloth.

Set a timer for 20 minutes and let the dough rest.

Now, go fold some laundry!

little dough ballsSeparate the dough into pieces.  I usually make 8-10 tortillas with this recipe.

tortilla cookingRoll out your tortilla and cook it for 30s on each side.  They won’t look perfect, but they’ll eat just fine!

Thank you so much for this post! I have been wanting to make tortillas, and actually have only waited because I would like to get some flour from you to make them. We had tacos for dinner last week and I hated having to buy storebought tortillas because I know homemade ones are healthier and cheaper!

    Hey Kelly,

These look great! And after buying a package of tortillas today, I can see how it would definitely save some money to make them! I have a quick question. Does the original recipe make 8-10 tortillas or does your tripled recipe make 8-10 tortillas?

    Thanks so much!
    Hannah

The original. :) And really, you can make as many or as little as you want–the difference would be the size of the tortilla.

Wonderful! Thanks Kelly! I’ll be trying these soon… :)

For those of us who can’t afford a grain mill right now, what would be the next best flour to use? Whole wheat?

How do you freeze your tortillas? We made these last night and it was a super fun family activity. :D Dad loved helping!

I put parchment paper between each tortilla and freeze about a dozen in a bag. It’s fun, isn’t it?? :)
