Mineral Based Makeup: A Review

I strive to be consistent across the board in my pursuit of health.  I seek to eat well and avoid unnatural ingredients in my food.   Also, in everything I come into contact with (so far as I have control over it), I aim to keep it natural.  That’s why I’m excited to tell you about my favorite mineral based makeup!  I have been using it for about 15 months now and I love it.  Everyday Minerals is the brand I chose out of the many mineral makeup brands to choose from.  I did a lot of research before settling on this one, due to the price and ingredients.  I was happy to learn that the products contain anywhere from 2-4 ingredients!  (Except for the lip glosses – they contain more)  Their products contain no parabens, no artificial dyes, no sodium laurel sulfate, no propylene glycol, and also are void of many more questionable ingredients!  We are talking basic makeup.mineral based makeup

Now, I should point out that according to the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Safety Database, the makeup rates anywhere from 1-3.  The site reviews the safety of thousands of skin care products.  0-2 is considered “low hazard,” 3-6 is considered “moderate hazard,” and 7-10 is considered “high hazard.”    So, keep that in mind.

I chose to switch over the mineral based makeup because, like I mentioned, I’m a stickler for consistency.  It didn’t make sense to me to continue using products that could possibly cause harm to myself or a growing baby.  So, I began researching everything on the database mentioned above.  This is when I stopped using commercial cleaning products and switched to vinegar and baking soda, too.  I have never regretted it or turned back! As I began researching, I learned a lot about the different mineral makeup brands and the benefits of mineral makeup.   In the end, I settled on Everyday Minerals.

Why I chose Everyday Minerals for my mineral based makeup:

-The price was right!  The makeup is very affordable, especially for the quantity you receive.

-I was able to try FREE mineral makeup samples (plus shipping which was $5 or less) before purchasing a set.  The samples are not stingy, either!  In fact, I’m still using some of them!

-It is a small company.  This is almost always better in terms of customer service and the quality of the product.

Benefits of Mineral Makeup

-Better for your body.  The ingredient list is significantly shorter!  This is a guide that I also use for buying food: short ingredient list. Not only that, but the ingredients listed are better for you.  If you check out the database, you can see exactly what rating each one has and why it might possibly be listed as a hazard.

-It is cost effective.  I have not had to replace any of my makeup since first purchasing it.  Mind you, I am pretty simple when it comes to makeup!

-Non-comedogenic.  It won’t clog your pores!

-Ingredients are inorganic, meaning that bacteria won’t live in the makeup and cause skin problems.

-No preservatives are used due to the inorganic ingredients and the shelf life is actually longer than “regular” cosmetics.

-Does not contain Bismuth Oxychloride.  This is known to cause skin irritation (read here, here, and here).

If you are just starting to reconsider your skincare products, download the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Guide for insight as to what you should avoid and why.

I hope you’ll make the switch and buy mineral makeup.  I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  Everyday Minerals has a large selection of foundations, blushes, eye shadows, concealers, powders, bronzers, and even different makeup brushes.  Don’t forget about the free mineral makeup samples!

After making the switch to mineral based makeup, I won’t go back!  And, just so you know, I am in no way affiliated with Everyday Minerals (other than being a happy customer!).
